Gantahaz Lake

Located approximately 5 kilometers north of Mackenzie town site along highway 39, Gantahaz Lake Trail and Recreation Site is a beautiful place to explore. Whether you are looking for a place to go hiking, fishing, picnicking, or other outdoor leisure activities, Gantahaz Lake is definitely a place to visit in Mackenzie, British Columbia.

Gantahaz Lake (55.3802, -123.1466), located in the Omineca Region, in Mackenzie British Columbia, Canada spans 44.9 hectares.

This beautiful lake is accessible year round for numerous activities.

You can frequently see eagles, beavers, bears and other wildlife near the recreation site and on the trail that goes around the lake.

Gantahaz Lake Recreation Site

The parking lot is large with plenty of parking and is made of gravel. There is plenty of seating located within the upper gravel area with a view of the lake. There is accessible picnic tables, as well as benches. There are also more picnic tables that require the users to go off the main pathway.

Fire pits are provided in some of the picnic areas. Please follow BC Wildfire Service restrictions and recommendations. Please ensure your fires are properly extinguished before leaving the area.

This recreation site has pit toilets that feature wide entryways, plenty of space to move within, grab bars, and generally meets accessibility standards.

Animal resistant garbage receptacles available on site.

Fishing

Gantahaz Lake is an ideal spot for families and beginners who want to go fishing.

Cast right from the shore of venture out onto the lake in a self propelled watercraft (such as canoes or kayaks). It is stocked annually with Eastern Brook Trout. There is a fairly steep incline to get down to the waters edge at the boat launch.

Gantahaz Lake is also a great place to go ice fishing in the winter. Please follow ice safety guidelines.

Gantahaz Lake Trail

This beautiful hiking trail takes around 1 hour to complete. Dogs are welcome on this trail but must be on a leash at all times.

This trail is great for families and is generally considered to be child-friendly. Please be aware of wildlife on this trail, especially if hiking with young children. There are picnic tables and benches located along the trail.

The trail is narrow in spots and users should be mindful of tripping hazards under foot such as exposed roots. The condition of the trail can vary due to weather.
